You Don't Have to Pretend You're "Just Asking"
Dreamgirl Diaries
I can usually tell within the first couple of minutes when someone is trying to work up the courage to ask what they really want to ask.
It usually starts with something like, "This might sound weird..." or, "Random question..."
I always smile a little because I already know where we're headed.
Here's the thing. You don't have to convince me you're "just asking." You don't have to pretend you're asking for a friend, either. I promise your friend has been getting blamed for years.
One of my favorite parts of this job is watching someone relax after they realize they don't have to perform. They don't have to act cooler than they are or hide behind jokes. They can simply ask the question they've been carrying around.
Most of the time, that question isn't nearly as shocking as they thought it would be.
Sometimes the hardest part isn't saying it out loud.
It's giving yourself permission to.
